about

Forests, defined by peaceful stirrings of leaves, critters, and ambling streams, as well as magic, threat, and destruction, are often sites of projection. The seasoned outdoorswoman, full of knowledge and curiosity, experiences very different woods from the unequipped novice, or the stranded driver–to say nothing of the poor soul caught in the witch’s dreaded lair. Folktales, myths, and genuine tales of discovery, peril, and wonder continually breathe human meaning into perfect ecosystems, even as they often go mistreated and unloved.

Featuring works by thirteen artists across the gallery’s program, this presentation at the 2022 edition of the Dallas Art Fair casts a headlamp on a few corners of the ten billion acres of forest that cover our world. Rooted in observation, manipulation, unknowns, and the instinctually felt, disparate positions become an ecosystem unto themselves, informing and complicating one another.
