about

Moskowitz Bayse is pleased to present photographs and drawings by Rachael Browning and sculpture by Ian L.C. Swordy at the 2022 edition of NADA New York. This presentation is accompanied by the public debut of Ian L.C. Swordy’s monumental marble sculpture titled The Return, which will be installed in the outdoor lounge at the fair. Advancing wildly distinct understandings of the implied performance of making an object as a tangible contributor to its eventual meaning, these two artists become unexpectedly present in the viewer’s experience of their respective works.

Rachael Browning creates problems in natural and urban landscapes, then seeks to solve them with commercial hardware and building materials, creating humorous still lifes that invite the viewer to consider the why and the how as intimately interrelated. The artist’s body becomes present through the self-justified labors and travels that ground and define her pictures.

Ian L.C. Swordy, emerging from a music-cum-performance art background, thinks constantly and generatively about the body’s inextinguishable role in the making of sculpture. His physical labor–the persistent blows of his hammer followed by relentless hand polishing–form a record of making on the surfaces of his objects. Along with elements of found materials, the artist’s sculptures become talismans of their own making and the experiences that occasioned them.
