press release

Moskowitz Bayse is pleased to present Things as They Are, an exhibition of new works by Adam Moskowitz. This is the artist’s second solo presentation with the gallery.

Adam Moskowitz translates structural elements of music into visual abstractions. In Things As They Are, he presents a series of in-camera multiple exposures printed on different materials, peripatetically shifting meaning between image, material, and object.

This body of work marks the artist’s continued use of multiple exposure as a tool; by nature, it is a technique capable of releasing the medium of photography from the constraints of representation, while paradoxically relying on the objectivity of the camera to record what lies beyond its lens. Through prolonged observation, practice, and repetition of image making, Moskowitz has cultivated a language of formal qualities that he calls on, in varying combinations, to strike different visual chords.

In this exhibition, specific images are paired with and printed on concrete, paper, and aluminum. These materials share both natural and industrial connotations; affiliations are amplified by the choice of photographic composition. In tandem, tension between association and disassociation of the recognizable is heightened; the presumption of something understood is transformed.

Adam Moskowitz (b. 1989) studied Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music, and Art History at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
